The Hytale team has been silent over the last months, posting occasional postcards but not announcing anything about their progress. Even though development updates don’t come out very often, when they do, there is always exciting news inspiring the community.

It was previously announced that the game would use C# for the client. Later on, the team realized that far more people would be reached if their work were available for consoles and other platforms. This is what led them to the idea that other technologies may be more suitable than their initial choice for a programming language.

In the last announcement on 22 July 2022, the dev team shared their plans to redevelop Hytale in C++. A low level programming language like C++ is usually used when programs need to work as close to the operating system as possible. This is particularly important for games because they have to utilize hardware resources very efficiently. C#, on the other hand, can increase the difficulty of optimizing them for non-Windows operating systems such as the ones used on the PlayStation and SteamDeck.

The main goal is to create a game that can run everywhere with minimal changes so that a different version is not created every time a new console comes out. Although the development overhead is going to delay the original schedules, the end result will be a better supported game over the years.

The decision to change the core technology to C++ may create more opportunities but will increase the workload nonetheless. Imagine changing the type of bricks of a nearly complete 3-storey building. It is going to be a tremendous amount of work. The dev team is really dedicated to creating a game that does not disappoint anyone and this is reflected in the decisions they take, always choosing the best.

Hytale is going to be a really inspiring universe with such a dedicated team working on it. We can only admire their decision making, always choosing what is the best for the project.
